14 Mar Mothers Day Ideas
To anyone who has ever got it wrong by gifting a cookbook or gardening tools on this special Mothering Sunday, trust us, along with flowers and scent, liquid offerings with style, panache and elegance are a far better strategy! When a celebratory family gathering is convened, please find a few suggestions below, and for what its worth, a wine and food match.
Always worth starting with an aperitif, how about our fantastic MIRABEAU DRY GIN.
Mirabeau is composed of a grape-based neutral spirit blended with a hint of the estate’s famous rosé then infused with Provencal botanicals. Lemon and coriander add layers of fresh citrus character. Orris and angelica root impart floral and earthy tones respectively. Rose petals, lavender and jasmine are used sparingly to bring a variety of floral tones. Finally, bay, thyme and rosemary add a finely balanced herbaceous character to the blend. Dry yet soft it can be sipped with ice, blended with a dry vermouth for a ‘martini’ or partnered with a neutral tonic with a sprig of rosemary. And more importantly it looks the part too!

How about some sparkles? Can’t beat a classic Champagne from France
From a highly respected ‘Grower’ Producer from the village of Bouzy, Cuvee Dom Basle is based on base, ‘reserve’ wines from the 2015 and ’16 vintage and is made from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. A well-crafted wine with a fine mousse, aromas of white, exotic, and dried fruits and a seductive well-balanced character and fine acidity.
Or how about something a bit closer to home from Dorset
Dorset’s finest fizz! Furleigh is set in the stunning Dorset countryside near Bridport, just 5 miles from the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The soil here, on this twenty hectare estate is chalk, the same as Champagne. Proprietors Ian and Rebecca Edwards produce a mere 40,000 bottles of sparkling wine, (sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t). The blend here, is 40% Chardonnay and 30 % for both Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Aged for 18 months before disgorging, the wine has gentle, evenly rising bubbles with notes of green apple, citrus and warm pastries.
A delicious crisp white…..
From a tiny third generation estate in the famous Chablis region; a fine, balanced and mineral example that would be ideal with a smoked salmon or shellfish starter as the acidity will contrast to the richness of salmon, and the sweetness of the prawns. I can taste those prawns already.
A more richly styled, opulent white…..
From the cool climate region of Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne. A bit of a rarity this one, Pinot Gris far away from its spiritual home in Alsace. Aged in old French oak, it has a great texture and complexity and notes of peach, apricot and cinnamon.
A stylish rose….
This 30 hectare estate lies in Provence’s ‘Golden Triangle’, the source of the region’s best pinks! Made from Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle grapes, lovely and pale in colour it draws one in. The nose and taste profile is full and lush while being bone dry with a smooth finish.
Finally, red options to consider; A supple red…
From an 18-hectare estate farmed by the fourth generation of the Thevenet family. Côte du Py is a premium sub-zone within the appellation with soils rich in schist and decomposed granite, at an altitude of 300 metres. The wine is aged for 18 months in old oak. A delightful wine with a deep garnet colour, nose of cherry and wholemeal toast, a certain power on the palate, accompanied by supple tannins.
Or how about a richer more structured red…….
A sophisticated and serious wine with the nose showing leather, dark chocolate and black fruit compote. The palate is rich and very full bodied revealing dark bramble fruit, black pepper spice and a subtle note of sweet earth.
